“Exile no. 1” by Alissar Laham

“Exile no. 1” by Alissar Laham

No matter where I roam on this land I have no home
For every inch of it was stolen before mine was the one
For service or for grief
A custodian I shall be
From the custodians I shall learn
The practice for which we yearn
To be of the land even when torn from it
To respect every land as your own
As a love letter to the earth scorched
To the trees the once-ler takes
We sow the seeds and see the stakes
The roots too deep the uproot
The earth too grand to entirely pollute
For it will adapt and fade the mark of the parasite
A distant and terrible memory
That I have no desire to be apart of
That I only desire to remedy
